A busy Locksmith in Wilmslow

It has been a busy few weeks for us at Cusworth Locksmiths in Wilmslow.

Some of the jobs recently carried out were making a small master key system for a business in Knutsford.

We also supplied some patented keys to an Alderley Edge company, cut on our new computerised machine, which cuts most keys from the code.

We have also repaired a broken Lockmaster mechanism on an uPVC front door in Hazel Grove, Stockport. It was jammed shut and would not fully unlock, the roller and hookbolt would not unlock. We soon had it open using some of our specialist uPVC locksmith tools. Once open we quickly repaired it - without the need for a new uPVC gearbox or complete locking mechanism.

We also fitted a new BS3621 5 lever Deadlock to a front door in Heald Green. A quick trip to Knutsford to pick open a piece of furniture, and a Yale 77 nightlatch lock was fitted in Wilmslow.

We had an urgent night time call out to an elderly person who needed a emergency locksmith in Bramhall, who had lost their rear door key and was unable to lock the pvc door. Our Locksmith quickly fitted a new kite markedTS007 Euro cylinder, which is pick, bump and snap resistant.

We are increasingly asked to fit external security keysafes for keeping keys safe and accessible to visitors, these are especially handy for the elderly who have regular visitors such as meals on wheels and healthcare visitors.

French window door hanging

Locksmith Stockport
Door opens out and sits perfectly against wall.
Locksmith Macclesfield
The important thing is where the pivot point is.  Normally "Parliament Hinges" are the automatic choice.
Here I measured carefully and used good quality 4"x4" (100mmx100mm) ball bearing hinges.

The normal size if an external door would be 4"x3" (height x width) this was fitted 10 years ago and has been the perfect solution...

Lock Snapping cylinder snapping

cylinder snappingcylinder snapping
There has been a lot of confusing information on the media regarding euro profile cylinders and their weakness against attack  from snapping. There are many solutions available. some costing hundreds of pounds!

Solutions include uprated cylinders and uprated lever handles

Whilst there is a problem with the locks being snapped mainly in West Yorkshire, with the many details available on sites such as Youtube, this problem will grow and grow to Manchester, Stockport, Wilmslow, Cheadle and Macclesfield
The first thing to check is the projection of the cylinder from the handle ( how far the cylinder, or barrel sticks out)  If there is more than 5 mm of the cylinder visible, then your home is at great risk!

Choosing Macclesfiled Locksmiths

Choosing a locksmith in Macclesfield

When the security of your Family or business, is at risk, there are many important considerations when choosing a Locksmith in Macclesfield.

At Present the Locksmith Profession is not regulated by the government.

With no official licensing required there are many so called 'Locksmiths' out there, that have received very little or no training and can only gain entry by doing unnecessary damage to your door and locks in your property.

A well trained professional Macclesfield Locksmith will only resort to damaging a lock as a last resort preferring to use non destructive entry methods at all times. Always make sure your Locksmith is Licensed by the Master Locksmiths Association look for the Logo used on their website or advert, also check the company on the MLA "find a locksmith" webpages. MLA locksmiths in Macclesfield are automatically CRB checked, (criminal records bureau) as a requirement, Don't be mislead if they advertise "Police checked" as the police cannot & don't check the locksmith Industry.

Always use a genuine Local Locksmith in Macclesfield, Look for a real Local phone number, not a Free phone, or just a Mobile number. Any trustworthy Macclesfield Locksmith will have a address visible on all stationary and adverts. At Cusworth Master Locksmiths, When you phone us, you talk to a qualified Locksmith, local to Macclesfield, not telephone operators in a national call centres

Be careful when choosing a locksmiths in Cheshire from a phone book directory, such as Yellow pages or Thompson, as they encourage misleading entries. They don't care that the public are mislead, so long as they get their money! (remember big adds with multiple locations & engineers will mean a national call centre, charging very High hourly rates plus vat, before the problem has even be diagnosed the meter is ticking, (someone has to pay the thousands of pounds it cost to place these national adds, so make sure its not you). Better is the Buy With Confidence Scheme - it's run by Trading Standards so its non biased and more trustworthy.
  • *Make sure your locksmith is Insured, Cusworths are public liability insured for £2,000,000
  • *Ask if your locksmith has any guarantees
  • *Cusworth Master Locksmiths Macclesfield guarantee all parts and labour for 12 months

Man hurt using gun to remove locking wheelnuts! God bless USA!

Changing a tyre
Man hurt using gun to change tyre

A US man has injured himself in both legs after attempting to loosen a stiff wheel-nut by blasting it with his gun. The 66-year-old man from Washington state was repairing his car outside his home when the accident took place.
Shooting at the wheel from arm's length with his 12-gauge shotgun, he was peppered with buckshot and debris.
The man - who police say was on his own and not intoxicated - was taken to hospital with severe, but not life-threatening, injuries.
The man, from South Kitsap, 10 miles (16km) southwest of Seattle, had been repairing his Lincoln Continental for two weeks, according to the police, and had removed all but one of the nuts on the right rear wheel.
Frustrated by the one remaining nut which refused to budge, he resorted to fire power in an effort to shift it.
"He's bound and determined to get that lug nut off," said Deputy Scott Wilson, a spokesman from the sheriff's office.
He sustained injuries from his feet to the middle of his abdomen, with some pellets reaching as high as his chin, police said.

uPVC Door Locks Can Be Bypassed In Under 20 Seconds! – 22 Million UK Homes At Risk

You may have seen recent reports on television news or in the newspapers of a weakness in the locks on uPVC doors. The weakness is currently being exploited by burglars in some areas of the UK, notably the West Yorkshire Police area. To our knowledge, such attacks are not yet common place in the Stockport, Macclesfield, Cheshire and south Manchester areas.
snapped cylinder following attack

The problem, known as snapping, which is growing around the country, are various methods are used by the burglars using simple everyday tools, allowing them to exploit an inherent flaw in the design of these Euro Profile Cylinders. The cylinders, in many cases, can be overcome in a matter of seconds and although we know the methods used we will not disclose these methods in any detail, as a precaution against “copy-cat” burglaries.
The lock in question is not of any particular make, but is the type of lock fitted to the majority of uPVC, PVCu and some wooden doors throughout the world, it is commonly known as a Euro Profile Cylinder. It is the part which provides the key operation to the multi-point locking mechanism fitted to the door. No matter how secure or elaborate the multi-point locking mechanism is, if the cylinder is compromised the multi-point lock can be opened in seconds without difficulty.
All major Lock Manufacturers are now working hard to find solutions to the problem.
Currently there are limited products on the market to combat this form of attack. Two major lock manufacturers notably Mul-T-Lock and Squire have produced a new design of cylinder which ensures the cylinder snaps at a predetermined position leaving the door still secured and requiring the use of the correct key to unlock the door. Mul-T-Locks range of anti snapping cylinders are called ‘Break Secure’ and Squire’s range are called ‘Snapsafe’
Although this design of cylinder is still not 100% guaranteed to prevent all the methods of attack used on uPVC doors. It will prevent the most common methods slowing down the burglars attempts and making it considerably more difficult, therefore increasing the chance of him giving up.
In addition to these cylinders some manufacturers notably Squire and ERA are producing cylinder enhancers or cylinder security devices. Various designs are available to suit uPVC and composite doors these consist of a metal surround which is secured to the existing cylinder underneath the door handle. ERA’s range is possibly the most secure, with the designs securing through the door to sandwich the cylinder in place making it virtually impossible to remove the ‘snapped’ cylinder. These devices used in conjunction with a Break Secure or SnapSafe cylinder will ensure the methods currently being used are ineffective.
The risk of forced entry via the methods used is reduced if the cylinder fitted is of the correct size and properly fitted. However often when cylinders have been replaced in the past it is found that an incorrect size has been used leaving the door vulnerable. It is recommended that the euro profile cylinder should not protrude outside of the door furniture any more than 2-3mm.
Remember burglars always choose the easy option!
In order to ensure you do not become one of the many victims of this type of forced entry review your current door cylinders now and consider upgrading your cylinders to the newly available ‘Break Secure’ or SnapSafe ranges currently available or fit an additional Cylinder Security Device or Enhancer to your existing cylinder.

There are now available for many uPVC doors security handles, and cylinder enhancers.
In the meantime, ensure you deadlock your doors whenever your home is unattended. We also advise that a door chain be fitted and used on the main entrance door when the house is occupied and if uPVC doors are fitted to other areas consider fitting additional internal secondary bolts, such as “sash jammers”
Other sensible precautions include ensuring that any keys (particularly car keys) are not left where they can be found by burglars. (The most common method of car theft is by breaking into homes and stealing the keys). Other portable valuables should also be removed from vulnerable areas.
A safe will compliment any form of security to the property by reducing the risk of sentimental and valuable items being taken should a burglar gain entry. Securing small valuables can save a great deal of inconvenience and upset and it is recommended that you keep spare keys, passports, jewellery, cameras etc. locked in a safe.

Lost appartment keys in Wilmslow, Cheshire

I had a call last night from a lady who had lost her keys for her apartment in Wilmslow. She spent over three hours re-tracing her route around Wilmslow, unable to find them. Wilmslow Police station were unable to help.
Following call to me, and within 10 mins I was on site. It turns out  the ERA B.S Lock was quite faulty anyway! also, the new lock ( a Union B.S. 3621 2007) was of the current standard, unlike the old ERA!
